June—blink—and now it’s somehow mid-July?! Time really does fly when you’re stitching, teaching, and summering in Puerto Rico. We’ve had a full (and fulfilling) summer: hosting our beloved repair workshops, prepping courses for the upcoming university semester, and actually enjoying a bit of that slow island living we always talk about but rarely get to practice.

Below you’ll find a little recap of what we’ve been up to.

June: Our Textile Repair and Reimagination Workshops, were a hit!

These workshops weren’t for aspiring Project Runway stars—they were for folks who had never sewn a stitch in their lives… and still walked out knowing how to fix their favorite clothes. Victory by thread and bobbin! (Though, to be fair, a few turned out to be secret sewing pros in disguise.)

What we found is that so many of us just want to care for the pieces we love—not toss them the moment a button pops or a seam gives way. And on an island where we import nearly everything, learning to repair and extend the life of what we already own isn’t just a nice idea—it’s essential.

We’re planning more workshops this August and September, and we’re even thinking about taking them on the road across the island—or offering virtual sessions so no one gets left out.

At the start of July in Caguas, Puerto Rico, I attended an event I had been looking forward to all year—Pas Pas, or Paseo Pasarela—a visionary runway experience created by Cristina Núñez. More than just a fashion show, Pas Pas is a celebration of fashion as art, and art as a reflection of the times we’re living in.

Forget eurocentric escapism—this is raw, rooted, and radical. Most of what graced the runway wasn’t just style—it was ARTivism in motion.

Today, the collective of designers at Modo Consciente is hosting a special event—your chance to shop local and support Puerto Rican designers while you’re right here on the island for that BB Residency.

June: Feria Calle Turned 5

One of our favorite initiatives in Puerto Rico just hit a major milestone—Feria Calle turned five this year! This celebration of creative re-use (yes, the one I’m always raving about) took place on June 28 and 29 at the MAC Museum in Santurce.

The turnout was beautiful—full of energy, community, and incredibly inventive ways of keeping textiles and plastics out of Puerto Rico’s landfills. From upcycled fashion to design-forward reuse, it was a powerful reminder that sustainability and creativity go hand in hand.

August Preview: Prof. Cristina Nuñez & I

In addition to being the brilliant mind behind Pas Pas, Cristina is also a talented professor and seasoned industry expert. This coming semester, starting in August, she and I will both be teaching new courses at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. In addition to a new class, Design for Manufacturing, this semester I’ll be teaching two or three more courses, and I’m very excited. I had never before had the time or space to dedicate myself to teaching in Puerto Rico the way I truly wanted to, and the perfect opportunity finally came. It’s also a great chance to test the sustainability courses I designed for this bachelor’s program and evaluate what ongoing improvements they might need.
